Why the Black Dog Ride?
• The suicide rate in Australia equates to one death every four hours, or nearly seven per day
• Almost twice as many people die from suicide in Australia than in road related deaths
• Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australia for men under 44 and women under 34
• 75% of all people who die by suicide are men
• For every completed suicide, it is estimated that as many as 30 people attempt suicide
• Suicide amongst men in regional communities is twice as high as men in metropolitan areas
• Depression is the most prevalent mental health disorder experienced by Australians
• Depression is predicted to be one of the world’s largest health problems by 2020
• Around one million Australian adults and 100,000 young people live with depression each year
• 1 in 5 people will experience depression in their lives; 1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males
Look at the stats, tell me you haven't known, don't know or don't suspect someone of suffering depression, having committed or contemplated suicide, perhaps it is you! Paul and I have come in contact at a personal level more than once with this particular health issue, at times resolved other times having a devastating result. What are the signs and symptoms? What do you do to help? Education and support goes a long way to aid in addressing this major health issue.
Both of us have had a great life, it's had it's highs and lows both shared with friends and loved ones and here we are about to head of on another high, so why not help others to work through the lows and find the highs again. No matter how things pan out if we can finally work through things and see that the glass is actually half full the future will look bright.
Black Dog Ride ticks all the boxes, loving bikes, loving travel, loving adventure, loving life and wanting to help. So what ever gets thrown at us, dare I say it "on another trip of a lifetime", it will be Tanks Half Full!!
